What is wellness and why is it so important? Wellness is such a buzz word these days but what does it actually mean?

Wellness is not simply an absence of illness, but rather an active pursuit of gaining health and wellbeing in all aspects of your life. Wellness does not focus on the problems at hand, instead, it places attention on how to manage your daily stressors and habits so that you are more capable of dealing with difficult situations you encounter in all areas of your life. Wellness is an empowering journey as you come to realize your own capacity to pursue a life of fulfillment in all aspects of your mind, body, and spirit.
Dimensions of Wellness
Wellness is as multi-dimensional as we are and therefore requires a multi-dimensional, holistic approach. At Burgeon we focus on the 8 dimensions of wellness, namely:
- Physical
- Emotional
- Spiritual
- Intellectual
- Financial
- Occupational
- Social
- Environmental
It can be overwhelming to think that there are eight dimensions that need your attention, but the journey of life gets taken one step at a time and so does your wellness journey.
Each dimension requires our attention if we truly want to flourish, but the goal is not necessarily perfect balance in all dimensions. Instead, we aim for personal harmony – what feels good to you? What does it mean to you to be living life to its fullest? How you answer these questions will determine the kind of intentions you set in each dimension and it will be authentic to you, your own unique balance.

Delving Deeper
As we slowly start delving into the dimensions it can be helpful to start asking yourself questions in each dimension. Start figuring out what makes you tick, what’s important to you, and perhaps what is being neglected along the way. Below I’ve listed only one question for each dimension, over the next few weeks we will be delving much deeper into each dimension but the goal here is to just simply start thinking about it. You could use these questions as journal prompts and see where they lead you or simply ponder them. Don’t overthink the questions or dimensions, rather view it as a self-discovery adventure.
Physical
This is all about your body and maintaining it optimally to have the energy and vitality required for a life of wellbeing. What healthy habits make you feel better and give you more energy?
Intellectual
Our minds are powerful and support us in so many ways. The intellectual dimension is all about feeding our minds and intellect. What would you like to learn more about?
Emotional
Emotions are our guiding compass and how we are feeling (or not feeling) determines how we approach life. Do you have healthy ways of coping with emotions?
Spiritual
Spiritual is not necessarily religious. Spiritual is the meaning, purpose, and connection we have in life. What creates meaning and connection in your life?
Financial
The flow of money in our lives. What is your relationship to money?
Occupational
This dimension includes our work and careers but also our down time and the things we do to recharge. Are you maintaining a balance between work and personal activities?
Social
Our connection to the people around us as well as our greater community. Do you take the time to connect with those around you?
Environmental
This dimension includes the greater environment – mother earth, but also the environments that we spend most of our time in at home and at work. Do the environments in which you work, live and learn support your wellbeing?
Remember to maintain a sense of optimism and positivity as you start thinking of the dimensions in your life, your journey has begun!
